Instrument & Electrical Construction and Maintenance

Electrical & Controls Engineer: Designed and managed a wide range of Instrument & Electrical Construction (I&E) projects in a variety of industrial, marine, petrochemical, and oilfield environments. Many projects involved hazardous area situations requiring explosion proof and intrinsically safe construction methods. Domestic projects were based on NFPA 70 National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements as well as IEEE Shipboard and American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) standards. International projects used those standards as well as IEC and other industry codes relevant to the host country.

Project execution activity ranged from single worker installations to management of projects with crews of 100+ field engineers and construction technicians. Workplace safety was always a concern, often using Behavior Based Safety (BBS) as well as guidelines of the facility owner. NFPA 70E Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace was also used to guide onsite safety plans and operations.

Construction-related activity included specification development, overall system design, equipment selection, and project planning. Project execution experience includes procurement, manpower scheduling, on-site project management, and supervision of commissioning & startup.

Some work was done as a "hands-on" technician in the field as both a craftsman and site manager. Other work was done as a project engineer or company executive. The I&E construction projects ranged in complexity from small single device installations to multi-million dollar projects involving multiple crafts with 24/7 schedules.

The nearly constant exposure to domestic and international I&E construction since 1976 led to licensing as an electrical engineer, control systems engineer, master electrician, electrical contractor, and electrical administrator.

A sampling of I&E construction & maintenance situations includes:
